Two hours pass. In your head, you write a sentence you have not yet sent: “They do not care about me anymore.” On the screen there is a marker and an interval. In your account there is an intention, a history and an ending. These things are connected, but they are not identical. Between facts and interpretations there is a space worth bringing into the light.

Not to stop feeling. To know what you are claiming.

1. What you can describe

In this example, you can say, “The application shows the message as read, and I have not received a reply.” Even that description has limits: it depends on how the application works and what you actually saw. It is more precise than “They are treating me with contempt,” because it does not assign an intention you have not checked.

The distinction does not make your hurt imaginary. Waiting can hurt. But “Waiting is painful for me” describes your experience; “They want to hurt me” adds an explanation about another person. If you merge them, a feeling starts appearing as evidence of someone else’s intention.

2. The story you build

Interpretation is not an error you need to eliminate. You interpret to find your way: to recognize a joke, understand a request or anticipate a difficulty. Trouble begins when one possible reading becomes the only permissible reading before you examine what supports it.

The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry on critical thinking distinguishes observation and inference among the abilities relevant to thinking critically. That distinction gives us a tool; it does not promise observation without assumptions. Here we apply it to an invented everyday scene, not to a psychological experiment.

3. A question that allows correction

Try separating three sentences: “This is what I observed.” “This is what I am interpreting.” “This is what I would need to know.” For the unanswered message, you observed a read indicator; you interpreted a lack of interest; you need to know whether a reply was possible or whether you have an agreement about communication times. You do not need to invent ten excuses. You need to identify the missing information.

Then ask without building your conclusion into the question: “Have you had a chance to look at what I sent? I need us to agree on when we can discuss it.” The answer may confirm your concern or change it. Both possibilities need to remain open if you are genuinely asking.

4. The exception matters too

What if the silence is not an isolated episode but part of a pattern? Include that pattern: dates, broken agreements and previous responses. Making distinctions does not mean starting from zero every morning or excusing a behavior indefinitely. It means supporting a conclusion with what you can show and acknowledging what you still do not know.

It is not distrusting yourself. It is allowing your account to change without abandoning your boundaries.

5. What would make you revise your interpretation?

There is a harder question than “Can I imagine another explanation?” It is “What could I learn that would actually change my judgment?” Without an answer, alternatives can become a ritual: you list them politely, then return to the same verdict untouched.

Take the unanswered message. Suppose your interpretation is that the other person is avoiding an agreed conversation. A later reply explaining a specific interruption would be relevant, but not automatically decisive. Did they offer another time? Did they follow through? An explanation and a repaired agreement are different kinds of information. Neither requires you to read a mind.

Now make your own account answerable to the same standard. If they propose a time and keep it, acknowledge that evidence rather than moving the test. If they repeatedly agree and fail to appear, record that too rather than inventing a fresh excuse. A fair test allows both reassurance and disappointment. It does not require a preferred ending.

A label can direct your attention without determining what happened. Calling the silence “rejection” does not prove rejection; calling it “nothing” does not erase a broken agreement. The practical question is which description accounts for the available evidence with the fewest unsupported assumptions.

6. You can act without knowing every motive

You may still need a decision before certainty arrives. “I cannot keep this evening open unless we confirm by five” sets a limit around your availability; it does not pronounce a verdict on another person’s character. State what you need, what you can offer, and what you will do if the agreement cannot be met.

This is a reasoning exercise, not a guarantee that a conversation will go well. It is not a requirement to seek further contact when contact is unsafe. Where threats or coercion are present, protecting yourself does not depend on proving the other person’s intention.

For your next ordinary disagreement, write four short lines: the observation, your current explanation, information that could change it, and the decision you can responsibly make now. Precision is not the refusal to decide. It is a way of deciding without pretending you know more than you do.

Continue with The Name of What You Feel. Before your next difficult conversation, write down a description and then your interpretation. Notice whether they match, whether one needs the other, or whether a question is missing. Careful thinking need not make a relationship cold. It leaves a window open for something you have not yet seen. Before the verdict, look again.

For a conversation that can test your interpretation, continue with how to ask open-ended questions without hiding a judgment.

Leer esta nota en español

M.R.
